Services to reduce your carbon footprint when printing

Offsetting unavoidable CO2 emissions with the Enabling Carbon Neutrality programme

With its Enabling Carbon Neutrality programme, Konica Minolta offers its customers an all-in-one carbon emissions offsetting service for carbon neutral printing. This service provides office environments and providers of professional print products with an easy way to offset carbon emissions that occur during the printing process. To compensate for carbon emissions, Konica Minolta entered into a collaboration with the international climate protection expert ClimatePartner in 2015. So far, customers from eleven countries have already joined this effort, offsetting more than 10 million kilogrammes of CO2. Customers receive an emissions certificate stating the amount of CO2 emissions saved. The Enabling Carbon Neutrality programme enables customers to meet their environmental targets: reducing their carbon footprint, demonstrating their commitment to climate protection and improving their corporate image.

How to program the devices to manage efficient energy consumption

Konica Minolta's office devices can be programmed to consume energy as efficiently as possible. With bizhub ECO for instance, Konica Minolta contributes to a greener office by effectively reducing energy and resources consumption through smart printing rules.

  1. Power control & sleep mode: Most Konica Minolta office devices have three power-saving modes. The most efficient of these, "ErP mode" (Energy Related Products), is compliant with the European Eco Design Directive. Being in this mode, the system can only be reactivated if it has been programmed in the weekly timer or once the Power Save button has been used again.
  2. Time & calendar function: The user can manually define when the printing system has to go into low power or sleep mode.
  3. Dynamic ECO timer: This is an intelligent automatic setting of low power or sleep mode as the office system adapts this from actual usage, based on a four-week analysis.
  4. ECO Scan: Thanks to its “scan-only” technology, the fixing heater does not need to be activated if only a scan is to be made. Newer systems also feature an integrated dual scanner as standard, which reduces the scan time and energy consumption.
  5. ECO Print: When the system is in sleep mode the control panel is not activated automatically when a print job comes in. Power is only provided to the parts required and thus, unnecessary power consumption is minimised.
  6. ECO Settings: Herewith, users can reduce display lighting.
  7. Easy set/Job program: Pre-programming of ECO system settings and functions.
  8. ECO Meter: Visualisation of individual contributions to the environment by displaying toner, paper and CO2 consumption, creating environmental awareness amongst individual staff.
  9. My Tab: Brings together eco-friendly features needed frequently in a single screen.
  10. Remote Care: With Remote Care, Konica Minolta remotely resolves technical problems without sending service technicians out on the road.

How technology contributes to reduce the carbon footprint

Konica Minolta's office devices use technology that enables its customers to benefit from low energy consumption, reducing their environmental impact further:

Energy efficient toner: Konica Minolta's Simitri HD polymerised toner, used in both office and production printing, has a markedly lower environmental impact during its production, use and recycling than conventional pulverised toner, because the toner fuses at a lower temperature.

Energy-efficient scanner light: The scanner's light source has been changed from conventional fluorescent lighting to LED, which no longer contains mercury. Customers benefit from power savings and low heat performance, while brightness and scanning speed are increased.

Low TEC value: Konica Minolta's office products have especially low TEC values. These represent a product's typical weekly electricity consumption (TEC), based on average office use as defined in the ENERGY STAR programme.

Induction heating fusing technology: Konica Minolta adopted Induction Heating (IH) technology to design an energy-efficient fusing unit. The energy consumption is significantly reduced as the temperature needed for fusing is reached much faster, and can be precisely controlled.

Ozone-free roller charging: A high-resolution output is possible over long periods, while the ozone generation is suppressed.

Konica Minolta’s engagements to reduce CO2

Reducing CO2 produced during product usage by 79%

With its EcoVision 2050 Konica Minolta aims to achieve a CO2 reduction by 80% in 2050 compared to 2005. In 2016 the company has already reached 49%. This is mainly because the production of CO2 during product usage has been reduced by 79% from 2005 to 2016.

Substituting CO2 emitting power sources with green energy

Where energy is needed, Konica Minolta aims to substitute CO2 emitting power sources with green energy. Konica Minolta joined RE100 and commited to source 100% renewable electricity for their global operations by 2050. With the overall goal of having 100% renewable energy at major European sites, the major sites like the European and German headquarters Langenhagen, one server facility in Hannover and all German offices are already supplied with 100% green energy. In 2020, the Austrian and UK sites will follow.

More than 110,000 kilometres cycled with Bike2Work

In Germany and the Czech Republic, Konica Minolta employees can take part in the Bike2Work action project by using their bicycles instead of cars to travel to work in the summer months. This enables them to demonstrate their responsibility to the environment and improve their own health. Since 2014, Konica Minolta employees have cycled more than 110,000 kilometres and helped to save more than 20 tons of CO2 emissions by not driving this distance in their cars.

Compensating unavoidable CO2 emissions

In case of unavoidable CO2 emissions, Konica Minolta aims to compensate them by supporting certified climate protection projects. Here, the company collaborates with the international climate protection expert ClimatePartner since 2015 and supports Gold Standard-certified projects only. Currently, Konica Minolta supports a wind energy park in Aruba.

In addition, the European headquarter and the Dutch subsidiary are 'climate neutral' companies. Further, Konica Minolta offsets CO2 produced during its events like European Leadership Campus or drupa and has offset all printing at Langenhagen Headquarter since 2015.

In addition, Konica Minolta offsets any emissions produced in manufacturing and transporting as well. This is done for all office and production printing devices, ensuring a totally carbon-neutral lifecycle.

All in all, Konica Minolta have been compensated more than 19 million kilogrammes of CO2 since 2015.
